NYC Music Scene | Sasha Allen

I've pretty much been a hermit since Christmas Eve purely enjoying some time off and laying low. By Sunday night i'd had enough. I reach out to my friends Sasha and Rob to see if we could meet up at my favorite spot, the Village Underground for Ron Grant's Sunday Night Open Mic.

I met them at a little past 11p and the show was already underway. I was really  glad to be out and looked forward to seeing them.... especially Sasha. I won't go into much details about her because a simple google search of her name will get you what you need... and besides I'm biased. I think she's simply wonderful.

But for now this: Sasha Allen in the last few years has been busy touring the world singing with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Babyface, Leona Lewis, and Alicia Keys just to name a few. Currently you can find her running around the stage of the Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical, HAIR.

The point of my post: She leads a busy life and so a moment of her time is received with open arms. It's always a treat to see her and an even bigger treat to hear her sing. I taped this that Sunday and just recently managed to upload. If you've been living under a rock and haven't heard of her then you need to know.  This is just a little example of what makes her amazing.

Please enjoy the power house vocals of the real, Sasha Fierce, Miss Sasha Allen. Become a fan of Sasha on Facebook and Twitter

Happy Holidays With Love - ChatGem

My best memories as child was when my Mom would let me decorate the lower part of the Christmas tree, while The Little Drummer Boy, by the Jackson 5 played in the background.  To this day I still associate that song with my home Christmas... that and the smell of freshly baked fruitcake wrapped in aluminum foil.

This is the time of year when we remember and cherish those memories as well as a great time to make new ones.

May this Holiday Season bring you all well deserved joy, peace and happiness!
Your Gem in Charter Always, Jah. xoxo

*UPDATE* Sex and the City 2 Official Poster/1st Trailer

OK, I think I'm getting excited now!  'Empire State of Mind' as the intro music?  Carrie strutting out of apartment building? Miranda looking like a hot tamale? Charlotte with the bebes? And Samantha...well, Samantha being Samantha!!!  Yes, i'm definitely getting excited! I needed this trailer because the teaser poster I sure was not feeling.  YAY!
 ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **
All right now everyone calm down... Warner Brothers has just unveiled the first official teaser poster for Sex and the City Sequel!  But it's only with Sarah Jessica Parker.  What's up with that?  What are your thoughts?  Has anyone told Kim Cattrall yet?  I don't know how I feel about this.  For now I just think I need my own pair of shades.  *soooo bright*

NYC Poetry Scene: Lemon Andersen's 'County of Kings' THE BOOK

We all have a story to tell; some more interesting than others.  I'm fascinated by those true life storytellers who's adversity has not a hindered their ability for growth and fulfillment.  I few months back I blogged  of such a case when wrote about Andrew "Lemon" Andersen and his one man show, 'County of Kings.'  County of Kings is a biographical account of Lemon's life growing up in the streets of Brooklyn and learning life's trials at an age where a kid should be basking in innocence.

To explain the impact of this show, at least for me, I feel I will not be able to give it its due justice.  If you were fortunate enough to catch it while at the Public Theater, then you know what I'm talking about.  If you were not able too, then the next best thing is the release of 'County of Kings' the book.

That's right.  This is a story of dreams, determination and encouragement.  Why wouldn't you want to have a piece of this in your life.  The book comes at a perfect timing.  It's a great gift or stocking stuffer.  The 'County of Kings' is currently available at

Lemon - as always, you are an encouraging individual.  Continued blessing. (Jah)

Brittany Murphy Dies of a Cardiac Arrest

To say that I am shocked would be an understatement. Let the speculations begin but no matter what, the idea of death is never welcoming and never ok.  Brittany Murphy was my age when she passed of a heart attack. That is not easy to swallow.

My heart goes out to her family and those close to her. I can only imagine their grief at such an untimely death. She had a beautiful talent and so much more yet to give.  May she find peace in her eternal sleep. :(

*UPDATE* Madonna & Lourdes

Shout out to my friend Susan who found the first public baby photos of Lourdes Leon.  Scroll down. YAY!
I just had to add this simple post of Madonna and Lourdes.  Lourdes is such a lovely young lady (I just made myself sound like I'm 65yrs old) and just as creative and stylish as her mother.  These photos do make me feel old though; I can still remember those first Vanity Fair pics of Madonna and baby Lourdes... which I can't seem to find anywhere on line, by the way.

I think we can all pretty much expect to see Lourdes in the spotlight  sometime in the near future.  On that same note, I have a feeling that she will be very grounded.  Madge seems to be a strict mum; at least this is what I've gathered based on past interviews - she's no joke.

Here is Madge and Lourdes at the recent NYC premiere of Nine.

Zoe Saldana is a Pretty AVATAR

Zoe Saldana seems to have found her nitch with recent back-to-back sci-fi films.   In her latest she plays the character Neytiri in James Cameron highly anticipated AVATAR.  I saw the previews at the theater and it looks pretty cool, which is a big deal for me because I normally don't gravitate towards sci-fi films.  I haven't seen one damn Star Trek movie so there!

I like Zoe and its also been a while since i've since a James Cameron film.  Here she is at the London premiere looking quite the classic beauty.  Oh yeah, and of course I had to include a cool pic of her as Neytiri.

Tiger Woods Takes a Sabbatical from Golf

I told myself I would not add my two cents to the whole Tiger Woods drama and I've kept my word.  This is all that will be written on the matter... at least for this blog.  Good Luck, Tiger.  There's a long road ahead for you and your family.

Yesterday Tiger Woods announced he's taking an indefinite break from golf and releasing this official statement on his website.

"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.
I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.
After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."

The Bridges of H William Shoes

I adore a great pair of shoes and I'm willing to walk any amount of painful miles with them as long as we look good.  Now I love them, but I don't know much about brands besides the ones that are flaunted in my face by either Carrie Bradshaw or Lilliana Vazquez.  Today as I flipped through my January issue of Marie Claire, this pretty little blue and white number with really detailed architecture caught my eyes.  The accompanying copy read 'H Williams' new footwear and handbag line, inspired by New York City bridges.'  Say what!?!?  And so my friend google and I got to work.

I found this great interview conducted by The Shoe Goddess which gives us a little insight on the designer, her work and her inspiration.  I could almost envision what she saw when designing each shoe.  It really shows how sometimes the most mundane things in life can serve as huge inspiration for others.  Art is everywhere and New York City is ever as inspiring.  Here's a little excerpt and few pics of the beauties.

The Shoe Goddess: When did you first become interested in shoes?Heather Williams: Since I was very young, I always loved sculpture and the act of physically making things. I think designing shoes is equal parts sculpture and fashion and I like the technical aspect of the design process.

TSG: How did your time in Milan help you in furthering your dream of becoming a shoe designer?
When I moved to Milan, I had been designing for 8 years already, but living in Milan and working in the Italian factories amongst so many important shoe designers who also produced there made my dream of becoming an independent designer seem so much more attainable.

TSG: Who is the woman that wears H Williams?
She is definitely very confident, but has the ability to switch gears when it comes to personal style. My shoes can be seen as a bit aggressive, but the materials are somewhat understated. It gives them the ability to transition well from one occasion to another. I really want my customers to be able to wear them to the office and then a night function, especially in this economy.

I am Keeping Up With The Kardashians

I don't watch much television (honest Mom) and this is partly due to my lack of interested in all those reality shows (damn you Truman Show).  These days it seems pretty much anyone can get a show - the majority of which is pure garbage.  And then there are the exceptions like Keeping Up With The Kardashians!

That's right the ladies are back for season 4!  Check out their sexy promo poster below - yeah, tons of retouching but let us look pass that.  This show is my VH1 weekend marathon guilty pleasure.  Kim wrote on her blog “I’m loving the promo poster for season 4 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians!! So sexy and glam!  I can’t wait for the new season to start… I know you guys are going to love it!”

And I leave you with this:

A WICKED GLEE Dream to come true

And my fascination with GLEE lives on. I feel particularly connected to this show because I was that geeky choir girl my entire four years of high school.  The rush I would get each time we had to perform was exhilarating.  I felt so important each time I had to wear my robe for an off-site performance.  *Choir Geek*
The biggest rush would come at the end of the year for District Competition.  We competed as a group and solos.  We'd work so hard throughout the year just for this moment.  Those are my best high school memories and Glee give's them back to me each and every time.  I love GLEE!
Having a heavy choir background it's only natural that I would love Broadway Musicals.  My favorites are WICKED and HAIR.  I have a long wish list for Glee most of which includes the songs I would love to hear and guess appearances - so far so good.  But the one i've been eagerly wishing for is an episode with Lea Michele and Idina Menzel.  I've been mesmerized by Indina's voice ever since Wicked's 'Defying Gravity'. And have seen/heard Lea Michele lately?  Do you see the connection?  Do you see what I'm getting at?  HELLO!?!?!

Here's a quick but great excerpt I got from the pages of FANCAST:
"A piece of the most perfect casting in TV history just might come to be: Tony winner Idina Menzel is game to get her mom on as the birth mother of 'Glee' songbird Rachel.
‘Glee’ fans have been lobbying for Menzel to guest-star as Lea Michele's look-alike on-screen mom - or any other relative - ever since the Fox series premiered. That campaign only swelled after Rachel performed “Defying Gravity,” Menzel’s showstopping number from Broadway’s “Wicked,” in a recent episode."

I wanted to all sorts of die when I read this article.  So now I sit and wait.  I can wait because this will be so worth my while.  Oh, yeah and here's another reason I'm loving GLEE.  Thanks to yankeegirl51680 for the great pics.  The lucky girl even got to take a pic with the deliciousness that is Mark Salling.  I'm overcome with jealousy.  Sigh!

And here's our lucky girl on the left.  Click here for more great photos from Yankeegirl51680

Natalie Portman Keeps it Real

I subscribe to Marie Claire.  I think it's an excellent magazine for women.  It's relevant just in the right ways.  High fashion items are not presented in an intimidating obnoxious way and it's always introducing me to another cultures way of living and even suffering.  I look forward to it monthly and next month even more so.  Natalie Portman, one of my favorite actress is featured in their January 2010 issue.  She's currently promoting her latest film, Brothers, a Jim Sheridan - directed drama about the effects of the war in Afghanistan on an American's family.  Here's an excerpt of what to expect along with a few awesome photos.

"For the most part, Portman keeps her personal life very private. Until recently, she was with the musician Devendra Banhart, but now proclaims herself to be single. She doesn't spend her time with a posse of celebs; her closest circle of friends is still mostly made up of people from high school and college, plus a small core of women in L.A. One of these, Rashida Jones, says Portman "would fight beasts 10 times her size to protect the people she loves. She is the kind of friend who can sub in and love you through the times when you can't necessarily love yourself."
Portman says she was "definitely working at a young age, but there's a whole growth in that." She got to spend three months in France when she was 11, shooting The Professional, and on her days off her mother would take her to Monet's house in Giverny and encourage her to come home and paint a version of what she'd seen. When she traveled to Japan for the premiere of The Professional, her parents insisted on a week off to explore the country. Portman shrugs: "OK, so I didn't really go to high school parties," she says, "and yeah, I didn't touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that's a good thing in many ways."

Love her.  For more on Natalie visit Marie Claire and of course pick up an issue.  (they should honestly pay me for this promo) :)

Have I mentioned that I cannot wait for NINE!  Aaaaaaa!!!!
I've added two more trailers.  The anxiety is killing me. The cast of NINE is intense.  I cannot wait for this movie!  Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sofia Loren.

NINE is going to be heaven.
