As a freelancer one of the very first questions to leave my mouth upon arriving at any destination is “do you have free wifi and what’s the password, please?” A bit obnoxious, i know, but its a necessity to be prepared. See, although freelance work has its perks, it also means you are basically on call 24/7. For this reason i never travel near or far without my laptop — plus you never know when inspiration will strike.

I’m spending a week in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and of course my first google search is for coffee shops where to plop down and work. But i am overly ambitious in my search as ideally i want something near the beach. I convince myself this is what’s needed for inspiration.

I’m so accustomed to instant gratification (the New Yorker in me) that when this did not come to reality within the first 30mins of my search, i turned to facebook for help. I was desperate.  For a change a friend recommended a pool day pass at The Standard Miami Beach.  For a mere $40 i would have endless access to my much coveted wifi and well, the pool. It doesn’t take much to convince.

At my destination i was thrilled to see the beautiful grounds and what would be my new office for the day, but quite disappointed at the new rate. $75 for the day! Listen, i gave in with little hesitation – by this time i had driven all over South Beach with such little luck and much less patience i simply handed them my credit card. Defeated.

The Perk: The $75 did allow for full access to the pool, a pool chair, two towels, wifi, and access to The Standard Spa. Tempting but there wasn’t any time for that. Plus, i believe one must be mentally ready for Spa Time. So there i was, for perhaps what turned out to be three full hours, one of which i worked and the other two of which i dipped in the pool, sipped on Arnold Palmers and people watched.

So was it a productive success? Depends on how i feel when you ask. The price did throw me off but overall i did enjoy myself. I received wonderful service, the pool was delicious, and i found a nice cool spot where to set up office and “work”.

But, there’s a lesson here clearly. Scroll down for more.
